 | | | | THE POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE | | | | A Philosophy Powering the Engine of Change in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean | | | “We at Republic Bank believe that as an integral part of societies in which we live and work, we are our brothers’ keeper. At Republic Bank we see the unraveling of basic human values, the erosion of family life and a growing absence of the qualities that make us human - we feel it, we are a part of it, and we are deeply moved to act.” Republic Bank’s landmark social responsibility programme, The Power to Make a Difference seeks to address some of these social ills through partnerships with non governmental and charitable organizations that focus on poverty alleviation and youth development through sport, education and culture, as well as the commitment of TT$40 million over a five year period (2004 to 2008) to fund those social programmes. The funding is provided for infrastructural projects that build capacity as in the case of the Bank’s commitment to construct three homes for senior citizens by 2008. Already one home (the Salvation Army Home for Senior Citizens) has been opened on Duncan Street in Port of Spain and the second home is under construction in San Fernando. The Power to Make a Difference programme has also been introduced in Grenada by Republic Bank’s subsidiary on the island, The National Commercial Bank of Grenada Limited and will soon be introduced in Guyana and Barbados by the Bank’s subsidiaries in those countries, namely the National Bank of Industry and Commerce Limited and the Barbados National Bank.

| Republic Bank Invests $100M in Youth and Differently Abled Republic Bank Invests $100M in Youth and Differently Abled “The new phase of Power to Make A Difference Programme will continue to reach out to and provide new opportunities and avenues for the young, the marginalized, the elderly and will continue to make inroads in holistic healthcare and social empowerment … and pay special attention to the differently abled.” David Dulal-Whiteway, Managing Director, Republic Bank Limited (At the launch of Phase II (2009-2013) of the Power to Make A Difference) Ever mindful of the vast and varied social needs that exist in Trinidad & Tobago, Republic Bank has made another bold and unprecedented move by committing the sum of $100M to social programmes that will enhance the quality of life for young persons and those who are differently abled. At the programme’s recent launch, the bank set out its mutually beneficial partnerships with leading NGOs involved in the alleviation of poverty and training for differently abled children. This bold move is even more impressive given the state of current global economic forces. Fruits of past labour Acknowledging that everyone has a role to play in the social development of our nation, Mrs. Anna-Maria Garcia-Brooks, General Manager, Group Marketing and Communications stated, “civil society and the corporate sector must play its part.” Five years ago the Bank committed $40M which increased to $52M during the period, of which $25.4M was invested in youth programmes, $19.9M in healthcare and poverty alleviation, which assisted thousands to elevate their lives. Promise for tomorrow This year Mr. David Dulal-Whiteway, Managing Director of Republic Bank, lamented the lack of facilities available to the differently abled and committed $20M over the next five years for the construction of four facilities to educate and care for differently abled youth. Another $10M will be invested in training programmes for children with visible and hidden disabilities. The National Centre for Persons with Disabilities in San Fernando is the biggest beneficiary with a $3M Grant for an Agricultural Centre which is currently under construction. Change for the better What began as a corporate social responsibility initiative five years ago has developed into a full scale regional programme, in Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Grenada and Guyana and has improved the lives of many. Power to Make A Difference is now a conduit for change in our society by addressing the issues often ignored, and working with NGOs, CBOs, but more importantly working with every citizen who wants to leave the world a better place. Republic Bank chooses to invest in change agents because “just because it is, does not mean it should be.” “Let us all follow the old Chinese proverb and seek the happiness of a lifetime, by helping the next generation. Let us never forget our personal Power to Make a Difference. Always bearing in mind that: “Just because it is, does not mean that it should be.” Anna-Maria Garcia-Brooks, General Manager, Group Marketing and Communications, Republic Bank Limited (At the launch of Phase II (2009-2013) of the Power to Make a Difference) | | | | | | 01-PMAD-Launch Making A Difference with the Dyslexia Association | | 02-PMAD-Launch Enabling the disabled at the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities | | | | 03-PMAD-Launch A second chance at success for participants of Loveuntil | | 04-PMAD-Launch Raising awareness about autism and assisting challenged children | | 05-PMAD-Launch The People who Make A Difference | | | | back to the top |
