Lambeau, Tobago, May 25, 2016: The inaugural Tobago International Sea to Sea Marathon weekend brought out an impressive 800 runners. The weekend began on Friday, May 20, at the Marathon Village at Lambeau Beach and ended after the prizegiving ceremony on Sunday, May 22.

Runners from as far as Kenya came to the island to participate in the weekend’s events. The races also brought out many local running clubs to compete against their peers as well as regional and international athletes.

The Marathon was indeed the highlight of the weekend, as the runners gathered at the start line before 5:00 a.m. at the Main Ridge Forest Reserve. These runners made history, becoming the first to run a marathon through the only protected rain forest in the western hemisphere. At the prizegiving ceremony, Garth Alleyne, Director, Strategic Relations, of Sea to Sea Events, made reference to the leatherback turtle, which visits the shores of Tobago each year. Like the turtle, he hopes that the Sea to Sea Marathon will bring runners back to Tobago to participate, year after year.

Tracey Davidson-Celestine, Deputy Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly, who participated in the Community Mile on Saturday, stated that she was proud to have been a part of the weekend, and emphasised that the Marathon was an excellent opportunity to highlight ways in which the Corporate sector and the Government could work together for the betterment of the island. “The Sea to Sea Marathon augured well for sports tourism and is a catalyst for further development of marathons in Tobago.” she said.
