CULTURE CONTINUITY: Members of the Caroni Hindu School perform during the preliminary round of the annual Baal Vikaas Vihaar. The festival, sponsored by Republic Bank, involves students from all 43 primary schools under the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha. The children undergo months of training and hard work to compete in the Ramayan Quiz, Ramayan Art, Hindi Quiz, Ramayan Test Piece, Gita Slokas, Bhajan Singing, Local Classical Singing, Instrumental, Folk Song and Dance categories of the festival. The festival began with the Chowtaal Sammelan in February and the finals will be held on November 17 and 18 at the Vishnu Boys Hindu School, Caroni. Baal Vikaas Vihaar, which has been hosted by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha for the past 29 years, has received the Bank's support to the amount of $250,000, each year since 2009, as part of the Bank's Power to Make a Difference commitment to youth empowerment through the preservation of cultures.
